It's rather weighty for its size. It weighs more than a typical rock. Petrified wood is actually the stone form of some plants and trees. When they die, the wood inside their cells remains solid even after it has been exposed to the air for many years or centuries. This solid material is called "petrifaction."
Even though petrified wood is quite heavy, you can lighten your load by removing the chips from the wood. The fibers that make up wood are very strong -- as strong, if not stronger, than steel -- and these fibers are what allow the wood to support such a large amount of weight without breaking. By removing the fibers from the wood, you get pieces of brittle bone residue (called "grist") that are much lighter than the wood itself.

The Dutch national museum said on Thursday that one of its treasured items, a rock allegedly carried back from the moon by US astronauts, is actually a piece of petrified wood. The granite was donated to the museum following the death of former Prime Minister Willem Drees in 1988.... The museum's website shows a photo of the rock with the description: "This is an example of lunar volcanic glass, which is formed when lava is ejected into the air instead of flowing out onto the ground. As this happens at extremely high temperatures, the glass will be transformed into a hard stone."
Volcanic glass is common on Earth, but only on Moon and other planets where there has been activity of some kind of volcano.
On Earth, volcanic glass forms when molten rock explodes through the top of a mountain or large hill, shooting hot gas and fragments of rock into the air. As these particles cool down, they become glass. The heat also changes the original mineral composition of the rock, producing a new type of material. For example, magma may contain quartz crystals before it reaches the surface, but escape it as glass. As another example, lava can melt rock, metal, and ice, adding different elements to the mixture. After it solidifies, the result is glass with traces of silver, iron, magnesium, etc.
