The typical method for cutting sheaves is to turn a dowel on a lathe and then part-off the sheaves. If you don't have a lathe, a hole saw will do, and the groove may be produced by putting a bolt through the center to create a mandrel that can be rotated and scored. Sheaves can also be cut with a knife or axe, but this is labor-intensive work.
Sheaves are commonly used in pulleys to increase the surface area of a rope or cable so that more force can be applied when pulling on it. They are also used in belts to spread out the load over a large surface area.
There are several types of sheaves: circular, cylindrical, flat, and irregular.
Circular sheaves have holes around their outer edges, while cylindrical sheaves have holes along their entire length. Flat sheaves have holes across their surface, and irregular sheaves do not have regular holes. Irregular sheaves are best made from wood because they can't be mass-produced using a machine. They are also called "key" sheaves because they are used to attach ropes to items that cannot be removed without damage such as keys on a ring.
People often wonder how to make a circular sheave from an irregular one. It can be done by drilling very small holes all over the outside of the irregular sheave and then threading a cord through them.

Bundle the sticks together and loop your yarn many times around the center. Twist the sticks into a star form and wrap the yarn over each individual spike to reinforce the shape until it seems more robust. You may start weaving now that you have a star form. Tie off the ends of the yarn and weave in the loose threads.
This craft is easy to make for children and fun for adults too. It's also great to take to festivals, parties or anywhere else you might want to put up a stitch star!
Supplies: Yarn, Scissors, Stick supplies will vary depending on what type of material you use but should include at least one stick about 1/2" in diameter and several strands of yarn.
Instructions: 1 Cut your sticks to about 12" long. If using wooden sticks, cut them in half lengthwise. 2 Make a loop in one end of your first stick. 3 Wrap the yarn around the stick to form a ring. 4 Add more sticks following the same procedure as above, adding them inside the first ring and then wrapping the yarn around those sticks as well. 5 Continue adding sticks and wrapping the yarn around them until you reach the desired size for your star. 6 Cut the yarn and pull it through the last stick to secure it.
