As a result, her images have mostly featured in books written by her. Brett's work frequently focuses on stories from many civilizations throughout the world. Her most well-known works include The Mitten, The Hat, and Gingerbread Baby. Each of these stories has been turned into a popular children's book series that includes five volumes so far.
Brett uses her own experiences as inspiration for some of her books. For example, she said that The Mitten was based on a real incident when she was little and lost everything except for her mitten. She also mentioned that Gingerbread Baby was inspired by an old fairy tale where a gingerbread man is left on the doorstep by mistake and has to be saved by the king's son.
In addition to writing and illustrating her own books, Brett has also contributed illustrations to several other publications. Some of these books include: A Child's Garden of Verses, which is a collection of poems by Robert Louis Stevenson, and The Little Prince, which is a story by Antoine de Saint-Exupéry.
Brett lives in Brookline, Massachusetts with her husband and their two sons. She continues to live out her dream of being an author and artist even though she is now a mother older than her characters usually are in her books.
