Cecilia May Gibbs was an Australian children's novelist and artist best known for the popular Australian children's story, The Complete Adventures of Snugglepot and Cuddlepie, about two gumnut infants and their escape from the big, terrible Banksia men. Cecilia May Gibbs was born in Melbourne on 4 May 1864.

She began drawing at an early age and exhibited her work at school exhibitions. After leaving school she worked as a clerk in a legal firm but spent most of her time painting and drawing. In 1889 she married William Henry Gibbs and they had three children. When her husband joined the army she took care of the home and raised the children by herself. She also wrote several books for young people during this time. Her first book, written when she was just twenty-one years old was called The Story of Mary Ann. It was published in 1886 by James Bowden in Melbourne and was well received by the critics. There followed another eight novels written over the next few years all of which were also well received by the public and sold many copies. In 1899 she published her last novel, A Little Girl in India which is set there during the time of the Indian Mutiny. This was followed by other stories about young Australians over the next few years including visits to Europe and America. In 1907 she returned to India where she lived for the rest of her life. She died there on 16 May 1941 aged seventy-two.
